GDC 28-Day Countdown

New GDC Standards enforceable
from Monday 30th September 2013

I am writing to all Dental Focus Customers to warn you about the new GDC Standards for the Dental Team and how this impacts your professional use of the Internet and your dental website marketing.

Why does Dental Focus care about your Website Compliance?

The major benefit to you for complying with the rule of law is “peace of mind” that is priceless because nobody wants the GDC website to be ranked #1 on Google for their own personal name, especially with a link to the hearings and reports that come free with that special ranking. The Dental Focus philosophy is “Websites for your profit” and we must care about protecting your compliance and online reputation.

The relevant sections from the new GDC Standards requiring particular attention are Standards 1.9.1 (Data Protection Act),4.2.3 (Social Media & Blogs), 4.2.6 (Referrals & Social Media) and 4.5.2 (Website Forms & Email Encryption), 9.1.3 (Social Media & Blogs) – see the extracts below which affect your dental practice website marketing:

1.9.1 You must find out about, and follow, laws and regulations affecting your work. This includes, but is not limited to, those relating to: • data protection • employment • human rights and equality • registration with other regulatory bodies.

4.2.3 You must not post any information or comments about patients on social networking or blogging sites. If you use professional social media to discuss anonymised cases for the purpose of discussing best practice you must be careful that the patient or patients cannot be identified.

4.2.6 If a patient allows you to share information about them, you should ensure that anyone you share it with understands that it is confidential.

4.5.2 If you are sending confidential information, you should use a secure method. If you are sending or storing confidential information electronically, you should ensure that it is encrypted.

9.1.3 You should not publish anything that could affect patients’ and the public’s confidence in you, or the dental profession, in any public media, unless this is done as part of raising a concern. Public media includes social networking sites, blogs and other social media. In particular, you must not make personal, inaccurate or derogatory comments about patients or colleagues.

Further patient confidentiality guidelines will be published by the GDC concerning social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Watch this space for compliance warnings and advice on dental marketing with social media.

Google Glasses: A Glance into a Future in which the Internet is Inescapable?

As you are probably aware, Google are about to launch “Google Glasses”.

They will cost £975 a pair and will feature a camera, voice-activated controls and send sounds to the ear.

The display will be just above the right eye and there you can search the internet (for directions, take photos, translate languages and more) and send messages, just as with your desktop or laptop. Storage of data will be via Google’s cloud, with which the glasses will be synced. They could also be synced with Android smartphones when these run the MyGlass app, which has already been released by Google.

But Google Glasses could be a potential distraction and may need to be banned in certain instances. Such as when driving. It will be interesting to note that should Google Glasses become as prominent as the tablet or smartphone, once your glasses are on, you will always potentially be in ‘work mode’ or ‘on call’, and in a state of accessibility and interactivity for the vast majority of your day.

Google glasses, Apple iPhone, Amazon Kindle, Samsung Galaxy plus all the other brands, are continuously coming to market. Whatever the browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc), whatever the device (desktop, laptop, PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone and soon; glasses) – the flow of information is increasingly now 24/7.

THE DECLINE OF THE PC

It isn’t news that the PC is being overtaken by the tablet and the smartphone.

Companies like Microsoft face a steep decline into inaptitude unless greater progress in these areas is made, as market analysts predict Android and tablets to outsell laptop and desktops combined as soon as 2015. Furthermore, international polls claim users are increasingly using their tablets and mobile phones for activities they used to rely on their television and computers for, such as watching films, researching and shopping.

Recent reports confirm this.

During the first three months of this year, shipments of laptops and desktops fell 14% worldwide, compared to a year ago (International Data Corporation). This is the fastest fall ever recorded. Sales themselves fell to just 76.3million units.

IBM’s launch of the first desktop was back in 1981, but we are now seeing sales of computers decline. Even Windows 8, Microsoft’s latest offering, has failed to boost PC sales.

This is not only because people are finding Tablets such as Apple’s iPad and Google’s Nexus 7 cheap and convenient in comparison, but also because most people already own a laptop, desktop computer, or both. As a result, shares in firms such as Hewlett Packard and Microsoft are suffering.

For anyone with a business that has an online platform, this trend is of great importance, as online adaption is needed to ensure continued relevancy with clients and prospective clients. So, for your dental marketing you need to think about not just having a website, but also a dedicated mobile website. In other words, a simplified version of your main site that is easy for potential patients to view on a mobile. Whilst this may have once been an elegant extra addition, a mobile website has indeed become a necessity.

The New Dental Focus Identity.

The online world is fast growing, filling our eyes with visual clutter and our heads with conflicting messages.

As such, Dental Focus has now re-launched, in order to cut through all this with a simple and clear message. Dental Focus design and build websites with excellent return; they won’t blind you with science, but instead aim to de-mystify and explain, in order to enable and empower dentists. The private online club for people ‘in the know’ has been closed – now anyone can join in.

 

 

To emphasize this celebration of clarity, Dental Focus has launched a new, simple and memorable logo with an icon that stands out like a beacon for the new proposition: “websites for your profit”.

 

The icon is based on the initials ‘D’ and ‘F’ which make an elegant, unique symbol reminiscent of the pound sign and therefore reinforces the company’s new tagline. Furthermore, the icon is similar to the number eight, a number considered highly auspicious and thought to bring great luck in many Eastern countries, particularly in China, where the Mandarin word for the number also means good wealth, profit and fortune.

Finally, it also suggests the infinity symbol, which relates to the infinite website options, solutions and possibilities available.
