Restorative Dentistry

shutterstock_20606612The British Society for Restorative Dentistry defines restorative dentistry as the study, examination and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity, the teeth and their supporting structures.

Restorative dentistry includes the dental monospecialties of Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics, and its foundation is based upon how these three interact in the management of cases requiring multifaceted care.

Carefully planned and integrated restorative dental treatment is often needed for patients suffering from dental disease, congenital facial clefts or major dental abnormalities.

Due to increased awareness and also the increased commitment on the part of the dentists, they now seek to receive the best options available from consultants in restorative dentistry.

These specialists often also manage the restorative care of patients with a variety of conditions in which dental treatment can be hazardous or complex. For example, rehabilitation of mouth cancer patients, medically compromised patients, elderly patients with special problems and those with learning difficulties.

Mouth cancer patients who are treated with radiotherapy to the head and neck need careful supervision, preventive support and timely care.  The consultant in restorative dentistry is often likely to be responsible for the care of patients in longstay hospitals, often in combination with the community dental service.
